Two new books : A history of Wickham and
Sussex Windmills and Millers
 |
This book, originally written and produced by Bruce
Tappenden in 1996, has recently been updated and
re-published by Wickham History Society.
Bruce, as you know, was the miller at Chesapeake
Mill – the last of the Edney-Tappenden family of
millers – and a founder member of HMG.
As well as a detailed history of the village, it
naturally includes some information and notes about
Chesapeake Mill and the millers, and a good picture
of Bruce with the mill turbine (copyright precludes
it being shown here). HMG did work at the mill on
several occasions.
The 160-page book is available from Pages Newsagents
in Wickham Square or from Chesapeake Mill Antiques
Centre, price £9.

At the left hand end of the railings in front of the
mill is the Dipping Hole, built by public
subscription in 1820, to save the villagers from the
need to wade into the river to get water, after the
mill was built which had made access to the river
difficult. |

Much has been written in the past
about the windmills of Sussex.
This is the first fully comprehensive
book on the subject, taking its inspiration from the
exhaustive works by Kenneth G Farries on the mills
of Surrey and Essex and dealing in three volumes
with all known sites (some 740) both historical and
contemporary. Profusely illustrated throughout, it
draws heavily on online resources as well as the
contents of record offices but contains much that
has not previously been published.
Volume One consisted of a technical and historical
review both of windmills in England generally and
those of Sussex, followed by a list of sites
(including wind engines) and the first part (A-C) of
a gazetteer in which the mills are dealt with in
greater depth. Volume Two, covering the letters
D-L, is now out.
The price reflects the fact that the book is
hardback, as this not only does justice to the
subject but offers better protection against wear
and tear, and it includes postage.
