Beaulieu Tide Mill Renewed

Michael  Carden supplied these photographs taken of repaired areas inside Beaulieu Tide Mill:

Upper levels after repair and roofing-in; note charred top of the shaft. The redundant mill stones from the closed race as they will be displayed. Old and new timbers.

He also commented:

“Having made the buildings structurally sound, wind and water-proof, Andy Phillips plans to invite HMG to advise on the machinery.  Once complete, the mill buildings may be leased by a local firm following minimal and sympathetic alterations, which will be confined to the C19 areas, so that they can be used for offices.  The old mill (without alteration) may be used as a reception area.  The firm is most interested in the history and character of the mill, and is likely to welcome visitors who share this interest.

The damage caused by the fire was, of course, disastrous but for the sake of the mill as a whole it was something of a mixed blessing in that it made it possible to undertake all this work.  The next challenge is a change of use that will ensure the future upkeep without compromising the history too much.  This, as you know, is Ralph Montagu's primary objective. “
