Newsletter 94, Autumn 2011 © Hampshire Mills Group

From the Chattering Damsel at the Editor's Desk
email:  chatteringdamsel@googlemail.com

Welcome to the Autumn edition of your newsletter.  It’s packed full of information and articles sent in by HMG members and we complete the excellent Alton Town Trail, begun in the last issue, with a comprehensive map, legend and mill histories.  Andrew Rutter has become a regular contributor and here he tells us of a National Trust Mill in Cheshire; Patricia Parr, way over in Kent, sent an interesting article about Abbot’s Mill in Canterbury, along with a very complimentary letter.  Peter Mobbs unearthed a fascinating article about butter being churned by water power (I would love to learn more about this use of a waterwheel – please write in and tell me what you know).  John Silman and Bob Goodwin supplied the information below.  Thank you all.  Keep ‘em coming!

Bob Goodwin, long time miller at City Mill, Winchester and now also involved with milling at the Town Mill, Lyme Regis, Dorset, wrote on 5th July, in response to an enquiry from me: I’ve been in Winchester City Mill for 5 days in the last week including 2 school visits and Saturday and Sunday milling. Dorset brings an occasional rest! Winchester remains good fun and very rewarding with visitor numbers and flour sales up again this year. We will probably mill 15 tonnes this year compared with 10 tonnes in 2010.  A busy man – and busy mills indeed.  I wonder if Bob knows the old saying in our Autumn Brainteasers!  It’s very good to know that City Mill is doing so well, both in terms of the amount of milling (and obviously successful flour sales) but in showing the general public the art of the machinery and skills of the millers.  Look up the events programme on www.nationaltrust.org.uk/winchestercitymill .

HMG Chairman and your Editor with John Burke, Global Category Director of Bombay Gin at the open day display of planning proposals for Laverstoke Mill.  Basil Hunt and David Plunkett also attended.  The company are sympathetic to the old mill buildings and have some interesting plans.  More about it in the next newsletter.
