The Hikers Hostel

Mariana Perry-Zoupanou  sent this postcard of City Mill Winchester that she had recently acquired.  It was posted in 1935.  In those days, as the caption says, it was a ‘Hikers Hostel’, and there is a barely visible pencil arrow – here highlighted in yellow – showing where the sender slept.  Although externally the building appears much as it does today, it seems that what is now empty roof space was then occupied by bedrooms.

The message is a bit hard to read, but has some interesting observations;  it says:

Winchester, Hants.  Picture shows where we are @ present.  Arrow shows position of my bed.  The place is extraordinarily draughty and cold.  We got here @ 12.55 (5 mins early after a good run).  We have been in Cathedral & St Cross Church.  The latter is a beautiful place.  The former is mostly Tombs of soldiers.”
